MUSIC AS PUPPETRY

Music As Puppetry is a whimsical, 30-minute, all-ages mask, music and movement collaboration between Dance Artist Jocelyn Mah and Violinist/Composer James Watson, using their joint vocabulary of contemporary and folk/jazz idioms. Narratively, Marionette Doll “Violon” gains autonomy and ultimately breaks free from the command of the Puppet Maestro “Gepetto”; the two develop a relationship oscillating between play and control throughout the work. Our intent with the process was to create in a spirit of collaboration; we both worked on music composition and choreography together in-studio rather than apart, and each had a say in all aspects of creation. When audiences view the work, we imagine them to experience play and ask questions about control. We are always open to other interpretations and questions.
