This double bill is for the curious and creative! Genre lines are blurred as a multitude of influences are brought into the Classical and Jazz worlds. Nate Waters presents music for saxophone by contemporary composers who bring wide ranging influences, from folk to jazz to electronic idioms, to their writing for Classical players.
Augustine Yates Trio will play music written by Yates that brings the influence of Classical stalwarts like Ravel and Shostakovich into the idioms of a jazz trio.

NATE WATERS, saxophone
Nate Waters is a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist from Calgary. He has a MMus in Saxophone Performance and a BMus in Secondary Music Education from the University of Calgary, as well as a BEd in Secondary Music Education from the University of British Columbia. As an educator, he runs the Western Canada High School jazz program and the Bishop Carroll Gold Jazz band, and serves on faculty at the Calgary Regional Summer Band Workshop, Musicamp Alberta, and the Vic Lewis Band Festival. As a contemporary/classical saxophonist he has performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Alberta Winds, and Friesen/Waters Duo, and has performed in concert series for New Works Calgary, Sled Island and Sound Atlas Festival. As a jazz saxophonist he leads the boundary-pushing trio Salarymen, is a charter member of the free-improv ensemble Secreted Language, fronts the straight-ahead jazz crew Wallpaper Quartet, and has appeared with the likes of Maria Schneider, Walt Weiskopf, and Calgary's 9th Avenue Big Band. As a multi-instrumentalist, he has also featured prominently in pop groups such as Eye of Newt, Samantha Savage Smith, Ryan Bourne & the Plant City Band, Hunter-Gatherer, Bennett Mitchell and Brock Geiger.
AUGUSTINE YATES TRIO
AUGUSTINE YATES, piano
Canadian pianist Augustine Yates is an active composer and performer whose music values improvisation and ensemble interplay. He performs as a soloist, chamber musician, and composer across classical and jazz settings, appearing at venues and festivals throughout Canada. His debut album of original compositions, An Open Window, was released in 2022 and nominated for Jazz Recording of the Year at the YYC Music Awards.
Yates has performed and recorded with ensembles including the Augustine Yates Piano Trio, Dennis Kwok Jazz Orchestra, One Yellow Rabbit, and the Rob Lee Group, and regularly performs with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Revv52, and Theatre Calgary. He is a piano faculty member at the Mount Royal University Conservatory, where he teaches both classical and jazz. Yates holds an ARCT diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music from Humber College, and has studied with musicians including Brian Dickinson, Robi Botos, and Adrean Farrugia.
JON WIELEBNOWSKI, double bass
Since completing his Bachelor of Music at Humber College in 2019, Jon Wielebnowski has been an active member of Calgary’s music community, performing across Southern Alberta with ensembles including Revv52, the Heebee-jeebees, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, the Prime Time Big Band, and the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. Since 2022, he has also performed regularly in Theatre Calgary’s musical pit ensembles.
A passionate jazz musician, Wielebnowski frequently collaborates with Western Canadian Music Award winner Jim Brenan, jazz drummer and educator Dr. Jon McCaslin, and JUNO Award-nominated arranger and pianist Mark Limacher. He also performs and records with three-time JUNO Award-winning vocalist Caity Gyorgy, including on her 2025 album Caity Gyorgy with Strings. Wielebnowski is a member of the music faculty at Ambrose University in Calgary.
NATHANIEL CHIANG, drums
Nathaniel Chiang is a freelance jazz drummer based in Calgary who performs extensively with jazz ensembles and collaborates with artists across disciplines. He has performed with Theatre Calgary, Springboard’s Fluid Fest, and at the Medicine Hat and Calgary International Jazz Festivals.
Chiang is a member of the David Lavoie Quartet and CWY Trio with Augustine Yates and Jon Wielebnowski, and has shared the stage with musicians including Jim Brenan, Mark Limacher, and Caity Gyorgy. He has also collaborated with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks on an ongoing improvisational work and most recently performed on Caity Gyorgy’s Caity Gyorgy with Strings and with the Jason Marsalis Vibes Quartet during its 2026 Western Canadian tour.
