BEYOND CLASSICAL
This double bill is for the curious and creative! Genre lines are blurred as a multitude of influences are brought into the Classical and Jazz worlds. Nate Waters presents music for the classical/contemporary saxophone soloist that is caught between cultures: works written by immigrants that take influence from jazz, folk, the avant-garde, and electronic music, and blend those antithetical influences to resemble classical and contemporary chamber music of the last 80 years. As a player who has had to stray quite far from his classical training in order to make a living, Waters is constantly curious about what drives others to incorporate disparate influences into their music and what reactions the resultant sounds generate from an audience.
Augustine Yates Trio will play music written by Yates that brings the influence of Classical stalwarts like Ravel and Shostakovich into the idioms of a jazz trio.
Yates will arrange new repertoire for jazz piano trio inspired by works and themes from the Classical Piano trio genre. By focusing on composers such as Fauré, Ravel, and Shostakovich, he will take themes from the traditional classical piano trio repertoire (piano, cello, violin) and translate them to the traditional jazz piano trio format (piano, bass and drum kit), allowing the ideas to grow through the improvisational aspect of the jazz idiom.
